BT earnings in line, pension deficit balloons

Analysts and investors were closely monitoring the results for an update on the company’s pension deficit, which they duly received. It expanded to £9.5bn.

BT Group PLC (LON:BT) began the early session little changed after it delivered second-quarter results marginally ahead of City estimates.

Revenues were up 1.1 % in the three months ended September at £6bn, giving adjusted earnings of £1.89bn.

The company was boosted by price rises and demand for fibre broadband.

Analysts and investors were closely monitoring the results for an update on the company’s pension deficit, which they duly received. It ballooned to £9.5bn from £6.2bn previously.

Chief executive Gavin Patterson said BT had submitted its response to the regulator Ofcom, which is mulling reforms to the way the company’s infrastructure arm Openreach operates.

“We've submitted our response and will continue to engage with Ofcom to reach the best outcome for the UK," he said.

At 8.44am, BT shares were changing hands for 388.67p, up 1%.
