Anson Resources produces battery grade graphite from Ajana

Anson Resources Ltd (ASX:ASN) has reached a major milestone by producing battery grade spherical graphite from its Ajana Graphite Project, 130 kilometres north of Geraldton in Western Australia.

The company achieved 99.97% TGC (total graphitic carbon) purity.

The test programme was carried out by ANZAPLAN, located in Germany, from a bulk sample taken from the Ajana Graphite Project.

The sample was sent for evaluation in February 2016 using early generation bulk concentrates.

The demand for spherical graphite, which is commonly used as anode material in lithium ion batteries, has been forecast to increase by over 200% by 2020.

This will be driven largely by increasing global cell production as the electric vehicle and energy storage systems markets continue to mature.

At present, China produces 100% of the world’s spherical graphite.

However, it is anticipated that new sources of graphite manufactured to higher environmental standards will be increasingly sought after in the coming years.

Bruce Richardson, managing director, commented: “This is a major milestone for Anson Resources as it highlights the company’s potential to produce high quality spherical graphite, suitable for direct supply to lithium-ion battery manufacturers.”

“Importantly, the confirmation of a 99.97% TGC at Ajana validates the company’s capacity to meet end user specifications. The exploration team will now aim to identify additional resource targets.”
