The Restaurant Group very encouraged by performance

Shares in The Restaurant Group (AIM: TRG) surprised on the upside today after the company said it was "very encouraged" by this year's trading.

The company released a statement to accompany its AGM today, and said that like for like sales climbed 5% for the 18 weeks to May 4 2008. This compared to a like for like sales increase of 4% last year. Total revenues for the period also increased by 21%. The Company's Leisure and Concessions divisions performed “well", despite the gloomy economic backdrop.

Looking ahead, The Restaurant Group reaffirmed its ambition to open 30-35 new restaurants during the year.

The Restaurant Group climbed almost 10% to 161.5 pence.
