ASX closes higher with a strong show by this medical supplier

The Australian All Ordinaries gathered pace today as this value-adding medical supply company helped health care stocks contribute to a widespread turnaround on the local market.

The Australian All Ordinaries rebounded 0.4% to 4,918 points today with gains across most sectors of the economy, although the big banks posted mostly in the red.

Telecommunications stocks rallied 2.5% on the session while consumer staples and information technology also finished strongly.

MARKET ACTION

A good session for health care stocks was highlighted by a 13.3% bounce for OncoSil Medical (ASX:OSL) to A$0.255 after the clinical-stage lifesciences company appointed Dr Chris Roberts as an independent non-executive director, with immediate effect.

This close represented about a 260% year-on-year improvement for the stock.

Dr Roberts is a highly experienced director and senior executive with 40 years’ experience in the medical innovation space, and was the chief executive officer / president of Cochlear Limited (ASX:COH) from February 2004 to August 2015.

He was primarily responsible for the significant increase in Cochlear Limited’s sales from $348 million in 2005 to $926 million in 2015.

Dr Roberts was also chairman of Sirtex Medical (ASX:SRX), from March 2000 to December 2002, and was executive vice-president of global sleep disorder treatment company ResMed Inc (NYSE:RMD, ASX:RMD) from 1992 to 2004.

Last month, OncoSil filed an Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its lead product candidate, the OncoSil™ localised radiation treatment for cancer.
