St George Mining (ASX: SGQ) has completed three diamond core holes initial diamond designed to test five priority nickel targets at Desert Dragon in Western Australia.
Initial geological logging of the drill core indicates that all three of the drill holes have intersected komatiite ultramafics, the rocks that typically host high grade nickel sulphide mineralisation.
In particular, drill holes 1 and 2 have intersected multiple, thick ultramafic units.
High levels of sulphur were identified in sedimentary rocks that were in contact with these komatiite sequences. This is important as a local source of sulphur is an essential factor in nickel sulphide formation.
The sulphur from the sedimentary rocks can easily be incorporated into the base of the overlying komatiite lava, acting as a trigger for the formation of magmatic nickel sulphide mineralisation.
Assays are pending with further drilling planned following down hole electromagnetic surveys.
