St George Mining’s (ASX: SGQ) drilling has intersected significant intervals of anomalous nickel, including 42 metres at 0.26% nickel with magnesium oxide levels exceeding 40% at its Cambridge Nickel Project in Western Australia.
This is consistent with the top of a potentially mineralised olivine adcumulate zone that may host nickel sulphides at depth.
Drilling also encountered strong intersections of secondary nickel enrichment including 19 metres at 0.56% nickel with a peak of 1 metre at 1.42%.
The drilling campaign has provided information that suggests Cambridge is a large structurally modified extrusive ultramafic body with high levels of magnesium (>35%) within the ultramafic areas.
This implies that the ultramafic areas at Cambridge are geologically consistent with the remainder of the Stella Range komatiites and that all ultramafic rocks along the Stella Range Belt – including Cambridge areas - are similarly highly prospective for nickel sulphides.
It also advances Cambridge as a highly prospective ultramafic zone with opportunities for high grade nickel sulphides.
The company noted that strong evidence of pathfinder elements in drilling provides new tool for selecting drilling targets.
It added that while nickel exploration often focused on testing marginal contact zones of the ultramafic rocks, review of its drilling had indicated the central part of the Cambridge ultramafic body may be more prospective for nickel mineralisation than the margins.

The Cambridge Nickel Project is located in the East Laverton Property, which hosts over 60 km strike length of the Stella Range Belt. About half of this is located within St George’s wholly-owned mining ground.
