Sovereign Metals finds new zone of flake graphite at Malawi project

Sovereign Metals (ASX: SVM) has identified a significant new zone of flake graphite from initial trench sampling at its Central Malawi Graphite Project.

Substantial widths of high-grade flake graphite were intersected in trenches at the newly discovered Dedza Mountain East (DME) prospect, where a discrete zone of graphite mineralisation was mapped over 4 kilometres.

This now brings the total to four significant flake graphite prospects where substantial widths and high grades of flake graphite have been identified in trenching and/or drilling.

Notable results are 14 metres at 10.8 metres total graphitic content including 6 metres at 12.1% TGC; 18 metres at 9.5% TGC; 20 metres at 10.3% TGC including 10 metre at 11.3% TGC; and 14 metres at 9.3% TGC.

Visually coarse flake graphite was seen in the majority of mineralised trench samples taken and sampling for metallurgical testing is underway

A total of 8 trenches for 502 metres were sampled over DME and showed consistent widths and grades of flake graphite mineralisation, hosted within soft and highly weathered saprolite.

This soft material is likely to be “free dig”, potentially requiring minimal blasting, crushing and/or grinding, and therefore a greater proportion of high value Extra Large and Large flakes may be preserved.

This in turn has the potential to significantly reduce capital and operating costs.

Another large discrete zone of graphite mineralisation has recently been discovered and mapped over a 20 kilometre strike length at the Dedza Mountain West prospect, where a trenching program, of 500 metres is underway.

Additionally, an initial program to examine whether primary crushing and grinding steps can be minimised on saprolite samples prior to flotation will considered.
