Quickflix in deal with Sony Australia a week after landing Telstra contract

Online movie rential company Quickflix (ASX: QFX) continues to sign deals with customers from the big end of town, and has landed a digital distribution deal with Sony Australia.

The company's deal with Sony is to provide a subscription movies streaming service through Sony’s next generation internet connected consumer devices.

The agreement means that Quickflix will stream movies to all Sony Bravia Internet Video (SBIV)-connected televisions, any televisions connected to SVIB-capable Blu-ray players and Home Theatres, as well as VAIO computers in Australia.

The hardware required is easily accessible, considering Sony has launched 22 Internet Protocol Television Bravia models (IPTVs) already into the Australian market.

The service will launch later this year, and is timed well considering the 2013 switchover to digital TV.

The deal is the second major one for Quickflix in less than a fortnight, after a deal with Telstra (ASX: TLS) that would see the huge telco refer BigPond Movies DVD customers to Quickflix.

Quickflix will make a variable payment to Telstra based on the number of customers who transfer to its DVD rental service. Quickflix will also acquire BigPond's library of DVD and Blu-ray discs and equipment.

As a result of the agreement, Quickflix will significantly increase the depth of its library of latest release and catalogue movie titles.
