Patrys (ASX: PAB) has secured $427,510 in Australian Research Council (ARC) grant, that will support its collaboration with Macquarie University to develop cancer diagnostic kits.
The non-invasive cancer diagnostic kits are being developed using Patrys' leading anti-cancer monoclonal anti-body- PAT-SM6, which has been shown to have potent anti-cancer properties in a large number of laboratory and animal studies.
PAT-SM6 has successfully completed a Phase I trial in melanoma and is currently in Phase I/IIa trial for patients with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma.
Patrys has now screened PAT-SM6 against more than 200 tumours from individual patients with various cancers, and the product binds to over 90% of the tumours screened regardless of cancer type or patient age, gender or disease stage.
The antibody has shown particularly strong response with respect to multiple myeloma.
The grant will be used to collaborate with researchers at Macquarie University and will combine Macquarie’s new Super Dot nanocrystal technology with Minomic’s and Patrys’ antibodies directed against prostate and multiple myeloma cancer biomarkers, respectively.
Patrys’ previous collaboration with Professor Packer demonstrated that PAT-SM6 detects specific changes in the proteins present on the surface of multiple myeloma cells, but not on normal cells.
These cancer- modified cells in the patients’ blood and urine are very rare in early stages of disease and their detection is difficult.
However, Macquarie University researchers have developed highly sensitive technologies using super-bright nanocrystals that will enable the detection of single abnormal cells in body fluids, and will provide the basis for new, sensitive and non-invasive, early-stage screening of multiple myeloma, prostate cancer and other malignancies.
