Patrys reaffirms potential of its anti-cancer antibody

Patrys (ASX:PAB) has reaffirmed the potential of its leading antibody that has shown promise as an anti-cancer drug for melanoma, following study of new data sets.

The results could boost the development of Patrys' pipeline of anti-cancer natural human antibodies by enabling both internal development and partnering opportunities.

Patrys has successfully completed a Phase I clinical trial to evaluate PAT-SM6 as a therapy for melanoma and in November 2012, it started a clinical trial in patients with multiple myeloma.

Recent studies show that PAT-SM6, a monoclonal antibody, can bind to two structurally different targets including an isoform of the glucose-regulated protein 78 (GRP78) which is present on the surface of tumour cells, but absent on normal tissues, as well as low density lipoprotein (LDL).

The study showed that the anti-cancer activity of PAT-SM6 is enhanced in the presence of LDL.

Previous studies have shown that PAT-SM6 antibody interacts with its target GRP78 and promotes killing of tumour cells through its multivalent nature and ability to form many bond interactions with multiple target molecules clustered on the surface of tumour cells.

The latest study results show a mechanism for the binding of the antibody to LDL, which could be responsible for more effective cell death.

This combined way of triggering cell death offers a promising mechanism for fighting cancer not offered by any other known therapies.

This results hold promise as the company moves ahead with a multi dose clinical trial of PAT-SM6 in patients with multiple myeloma.

PAT-SM6 is an anti-cancer natural human antibody that has been shown to have potent anti-cancer properties in a large number of laboratory and animal studies.

Patrys has now screened PAT-SM6 against more than 200 tumours from individual patients with various cancers, and the product binds to over 90% of the tumours screened regardless of cancer type or patient age, gender or disease stage.

The antibody has shown particularly strong response with respect to multiple myeloma.

The company had a cash balance of $5.79 million at the end of March 2013 quarter.
