Patrys (ASX: PAB) has secured a U.S. patent covering its lead product PAT-SM6 – an anti-tumour antibody that has shown promise as a potential treatment for multiple types of cancer including melanoma and multiple myeloma.
This is the second U.S. patent to be granted and covers the PAT-SM6 antibody binding to low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and components of LDL which are believed to be involved in the mode of action for the product.
Patrys is preparing to begin a Phase I/IIa clinical trial in Germany in the second half of 2012, using PAT-SM6 in patients with relapsed and multi-resistant multiple myeloma.
This follows the successful results of a Phase I trial in patients with in-transit melanoma which confirmed the safety and tolerability of the drug.
Data from the trial provided uniform evidence of the treatment’s safety, with initial data supporting its ability to specifically target melanoma tumours.
Secondary endpoints were also met in the trial, with analysis of blood samples collected during the trial confirming that no patient generated a significant adverse immune response to PAT-SM6.
This is an important finding as adverse immune reactions to existing marketed antibodies are known to limit the effectiveness of these treatments.
