Origin Energy (ASX: ORG) is drilling the first of 2 new development wells that make up the latest phase of the Otway Gas project in the Otway Basin offshore Victoria.
The Geographe-2 and Geographe-3 wells will be completed and connected to the existing Thylacine offshore platform via a subsea production system.
Both wells will be drilled by the Stena Clyde semi-submersible drilling rig.
The Origin led joint venture had approved the development of the Geographe gas field in October last year as part of the Otway Phase3 project which will ensure the continuation of natural gas supplies, providing energy security to Southern Australia.
The Thylacine and Geographe offshore gas fields were discovered in 2001. The Otway Gas Project development was sanctioned in 2004 and production from Thylacine started in the middle of 2007.
Thylacine is located about 70 kilometres south of Port Campbell, Victoria, while Geographe is located 15 kilometres north of Thylacine.
Other nearby fields include Santos’ (ASX: STO) producing Casino and Minerva as well as WHL Energy’s (ASX: WHN) recently acquired La Bella gas field.
