Marmota Energy (ASX: MEU) has commenced drilling at its West Melton copper-gold project on South Australia's Yorke Peninsula.
The program will test for the source of a large copper-gold geochemical anomaly, strongly coincident with geophysical modelling indicating potentially mineralised bodies as shallow as 15 metres below surface.
This is an untested anomaly, with the nearest historic drill hole being 4 kilometres away.
A 2000 metre maiden drilling program is underway, focusing on key target areas within a 1.2 kilometre long coincident gold and copper-in-calcrete zone where individual soil sample assays up to 197ppm copper were returned.
Drilling will also include a target zone adjacent to shallow mine workings where copper ore was extracted in the late 1800's.
The project lies within Olympic IOCG Copper province which plays host to the Prominent Hill, Carrapateena, and Hillside deposits.
In addition to these discoveries, BHP's Olympic Dam resource has grown by 48 million tonnes of contained copper in the past 10 years - more than the aggregate of all significant Australian copper discoveries in that time.
The Melton projects are strategically located less than 200 kilometres from Adelaide, with simple access to mining-specific infrastructure, roads, rail and ports.
The program is anticipated to complete in 3 weeks, and with a capitalisation of under $6 million, Marmota is well leveraged to any significant discovery.
