Cyclopharm receives Japanese regulatory approval for lung blood clot diagnostic

Cyclopharm Limited (ASX: CYC) has received approval from the Japanese Ministry of Health to market the latest model of its TechnegasPlus Generator for clinical use in the diagnosis of pulmonary emboli (blood clots in the lungs).

Japan is the dominant market for diagnostic radiopharmaceuticals in the Asia Pacific region representing over 40% of the total market.

Recent reports estimate around 1,600 gamma cameras are installed in about 1,120 nuclear medicine departments in Japan.

Despite Technegas being available in Japan since in the mid 1990’s, the technology was predominantly used as a research tool with very little activity dedicated to clinical use.

This approval will allow Cyclopharm to significantly expand sales of TechnegasPlus into the Japanese market, with commercial distribution negotiations currently underway and meaningful revenues expected commence during the first half of 2014.

The Technegas technology is a structured ultra-fine dispersion of radioactive labeled carbon, produced by using dried Technetium-99m briefly micro furnaced at around 2,700C.

The resultant gas-like substance is inhaled by the patient via a breathing apparatus, which allows multiple views and imaging for superior diagnosis.
