Buru Energy (ASX: BRU) has started the acquisition of 250 square kilometres of 3D seismic to determine the size and boundaries of the Ungani oil field in the onshore Canning Basin.
The survey is being carried out by Terrex Seismic and covers the Ungani and Ungani North structures.
It is expected to take about six weeks to acquire under strict environmental conditions in accordance with the environmental plan approved by the appropriate regulatory authorities.
Traditional owners of the are also providing cultural monitors who are monitoring the conduct of the survey.
Once the survey is completed, another two to three months will be required to process the data before any results are available for interpretation.
This will form a vital part of the reserves certification process, which will in turn play a key role in development of the Ungani oil field.
Production testing at Ungani has been encouraging both in terms of the potential to reach the upside reserves case and also in terms of the production rates that Buru will be able to achieve from the field in full development.
Buru had previously estimated that Ungani held between 5 million and 20 million barrels of recoverable oil before its performance led it to increase the minimum to 8 million barrels in September.
