Rubianna Resources (ASX: RRE) is undertaking the first base metal focused exploration at its Kookynie copper-gold project in nearly 40 years with the start of a high resolution airborne magnetic survey.
The project is located around 50 kilometres to the south-southeast of Leonora and 60 kilometres northeast of Menzies in Western Australia.
The fact the tenement has not been exposed to any significant base metal exploration for almost 40 years provides Rubianna with the opportunity to be the first to apply modern exploration techniques to the area.
A high resolution airborne magnetic survey of about 1,255 line kilometres is set to start within the next couple of weeks over the base metal target in the southeast of the tenement.
Compilation of historic data is ongoing with several additional targets that have not been drill tested already apparent.
Rubianna has already begun initial reconnaissance, field mapping, soil and rock-chip sampling at Kookynie.
The project includes the Kookynie East volcanogenic massive sulphide project that was previously explored by Western Mining Corporation (WMC) between 1969 and 1972.
Drilling returned several significant copper intersections with best results of 0.7 metres at 4.6% copper from 75 metres and 0.4 metres at 1.5% copper from 202 metres.
The WMC drilling tested a portion of one of the prospective horizons typically to a depth of 50 metres, also intersecting, in addition to the above intervals, anomalous (≥0.1%) copper results over a strike extent of 600 metres.
The copper anomalism remains open along strike to the southwest and at depth.
This represents an immediate walk up target for Rubianna which can be quickly evaluated with drilling and down-hole geophysics.
Rubianna plans to complete ground verification and Aboriginal heritage clearances to enable the first phase of exploration drilling to be completed in early 2013.
