Viterra ships more than 900,000t of grain in March, beats previous monthly record

Viterra (ASX: VTA,TSX: VT) has shipped more than 900,000 tonnes of grain from its South Australian ports in March 2012, exceeding its previous monthly record of 839,658 tonnes shipped in February 2004.

The company attributes the increase in exports to efficient ports and an efficient storage and handling network in South Australia.

Last year Viterra broke the calendar year record when it shipped 8.41 million tonnes of grain on behalf of 15 exporters.

In the first three months of 2012 the company has shipped 2.39 million tonnes from South Australia.

Viterra’s newest port, Outer Harbor, also reached a new monthly export record of 244,000 tonnes shipped in March.

Glencore Takeover

Last month Viterra signed a definitive agreement with Glencore International under which Glencore has agreed to acquire all of the issued and outstanding shares of Viterra for C$16.25 per share.

The takeover has received the unanimous approval of the Viterra board.

The transaction is expected to deliver significant overall benefits to grain farmers by providing them access to Glencore's global distribution channels and increase their ability to export their product into international grain and oilseeds markets.
