The roller-coaster of global equity markets continues - with the resource sector feeling the brunt of the volatility.

In intra-day afternoon trade today, seven of the top 20 resource stocks by market capitalisation traded higher.

Leading the way is Atlas Iron (ASX: AGO) which has added 2.4% to $3.37 as the market continues to digest the Atlas bid for FerrAus (ASX: FRS) yesterday.

Not to be outdone Newcrest Mining (ASX: NCM) is trading 1.4% higher at $36.58, with Mount Gibson Iron (ASX: MGX) climbing 1.0% to $1.69.

Rallying by less than one per cent in afternoon trade is Gloucester Coal (ASX: GCL) $8.15, New Hope Corporation (ASX: NHC) $5.00, Rio Tinto (ASX: RIO) $80.20 and BHP Billiton (ASX: BHP) $42.31.

And if there are seven gainers out of 20, there must be 13 fallers.

Leading the south bound charge is mineral sands focused Iluka Resources (ASX: ILU) which has been sold off 3.6% to $15.86, with rare earth player Lynas Corporation (ASX: LYC) shedding 2.3% to $1.91, as Aurora Oil & Gas (ASX: AUT) is down 2.1% to $3.25.

The sell-off continues with falls of more than one per cent for Resolute Mining (ASX: RSG) $1.05, OZ Minerals (ASX: OZL) $12.30 and Woodside Petroleum (ASX: WPL) $39.54.

There are another seven companies easing by the more modest less than one per cent, which includes Alumina (ASX: AWC) $2.02, Fortescue Metals Group (ASX: FMG) $5.99, Oil Search (ASX: OSH) $6.32, Macarthur Coal (ASX: MCC) $10.19, Paladin Energy (ASX: PDN) $2.40, Equinox Minerals (ASX: EQN) $7.86 and Santos (ASX: STO) $12.92.
