L&M Energy (ASX: LME) is drilling ahead at a depth of 160 metres at the Lockington-2 appraisal well in the Kaitangata coal field 60 kilometres south of Dunedin in New Zealand.

Lockington‐2, located approximately 6 kilometres to the south of the first well, Wangaloa‐1, has a target depth of 350 metres.

This well is located near Lockington‐1, which was drilled in 2007 and intersected 8.3 metres of Kai Main coal, which measured in the high range of permeability.

A third well, Wangaloa‐2, is to be drilled after Lockington‐2 and is located in the northeast of the coalfield.

The initial multi well program will comprise up to six production testing and stratigraphic wells within PEP 38219 in the historic 150 year old Kaitangata coal field.

Stratigraphic wells

Geophysical logging of Kai‐21 has confirmed 17.4 metres of net coal in three seams between 63.4 metres and 84.65 metres which are tentatively correlated with the Kai Main and Carson seams.

Stratigraphic well Kai‐22 has reached a total depth of 166 metres and logging has confirmed 17.6 metres of coal in the lower seams between 136 and 158 metres.

These seams are also correlated with the Kai Main and Carson seams to the south. The stratigraphic wells have been located to the north of the coal field to determine the aerial extent of the Kai Main and Carson seams.
