Intra Energy (ASX:IEC) has gained an additional lease via, its 70% holding in Tancoal Energy, within the Ngaka Coalfield.
The new lease covers 58.5km2 and is situated between and IEC's existing Mbuyura Mkapa coal deposit to the North and the Mbalawala coal deposit to the East, thus providing Tancoal contiguous coverage of the Ngaka coal deposit.
The Ngaka Coalfields are situated in the resource-rich western minerals province of Tanzania, 650 kilometres west of the deep water port of Mtwara.
Geologically, it contains sediments of the Permian Karoo Super Group lying within a depression in the Pre-Cambrian gneissic basement that strikes northeast-southwest to form the Ruhuhu Basin.
The coal bearing Karoo-K2 beds subcrop in the west of the licence are comprised of the Upper Mchuchuma and Lower Mchuchuma formations separated by an intermediate sandstone/shale unit.
Karoo's sedimentary sequence within the Ngaka Coalfields dips at an average of 10° to the East with some locally steeper dips resulting from faulting.
The Ngaka Thermal Coal Project is Intra Energy’s most advanced project, operating it through Tancoal Energy with the National Development Corporation of Tanzania.
The acquisition will provide an opportunity to increase operating efficiency, and the current JORC resource of 423 million tonnes.
