Bioxyne Ltd (ASX:BXN) will begin a randomized placebo controlled trial of its probiotics to test for its long term effect on the gut microbiome in humans.
the product is based on Bioxyne’s proprietary probiotic strain lactobacillus fermentum (PCC).
The study will examine the effect of Bioxyne’s PCC human-isolated probiotic strain of bacteria to influence the composition of the gut microbiome in healthy adult human volunteers.
This technology uses nucleic acid analysis to identify the thousands of species present in the gut of people, and each volunteer’s microbiome will be analysed before, during and at the end of the 6 month trial.
Scientific studies have previously shown that PCC exerts its potent effect on the immune system via the gastrointestinal tract.
This study is designed to further confirm that mechanism and promote the benefits of Progastrim in particular.
The trial will commence in August 2016.
PCC has been sold as a dietary supplement in capsule and powder form for over 10 years worldwide with no reported adverse effects.
Bioxyne’s revenue from PCC sales and royalties for the year to March 2016 was in excess of $1,492,000 which is 36% higher than the same period last year.
The company closed its books for the March quarter with $1.36 million in cash.
The worldwide probiotic ingredient market was estimated to be valued at US$33 billion in 2015 and is projected to reach US$47 billion by 2020.
