Tim Hortons to tap into Britain's growing coffee culture

The chain - named after ice hockey player Tim Horton - recently merged with Burger King to create Restaurant Brands International

Tim Hortons, the expanding Canadian coffee and donut group, is continuing its globe-trotting, as it announced a move to come to England, Scotland and Wales.

The chain - named after ice hockey player Tim Horton - recently merged with Burger King to create Restaurant Brands International (TSE:QSR), which may explain why it’s coming over here.

Hortons already has outlets in Canada, the US and the Middle East and last month said it would enter Asia by opening its first outlet in the Philippines.

The UK move comes after a master franchise joint venture was struck with an unnamed investor.

Daniel Schwartz, chief executive of Restaurant Brands , told investors: "This deal is part of our growth plan to take the iconic Tim Hortons brand around the world,"

"Great Britain is an attractive market with a strong and growing coffee culture."

He called it "a natural fit".

Hortons already has smaller outlets in Britain, but these will be full-service outlets.

Restaurant Brands International has more than 19,000 restaurants in almost 100 countries.

According to Bloomberg, Gurprit Dhaliwal will be the chief executive officer of the venture.

The company has not revealed the number of outlets planned for the UK, but Schwartz was quoted as saying : "Our larger competitors have several hundred restaurants in the market. Our plans are quite ambitious."
