McDonald’s Corp. (NYSE:MCD) is recalling millions of defective Step-It fitness trackers that were given away in Happy Meals.
The company is recalling 29 million of the devices in the US. The trackers reportedly can cause skin irritations or burns to children. There are over 70 reported incidents of children having blisters after wearing the bands on their wrists, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The promotion was a stark change from the company’s typical Happy Meal promotions, which often include toys and other child-friendly items.
The company has been attempting to break with its reputation for unhealthy fast-food offerings with changes to its menu and a new slogan: the simpler, the better. This promotion was meant to encourage physical play among children to encourage healthier lifestyles.
The recall seemed to impact McDonald’s shares, which were down by 0.24% at $ 115.14 on Tuesday.
