PREVIEW - Halfords pedals out first quarter preview

Broker Investec rates shares a 'buy' but has slashed its target price back to 390p from 470p.

Bikes and car parts firm Halfords (LON:HFD) pedals out a first quarter trading update on the day and investors will be keen to see how the firm has dealt with the macro-environment and consumer pressures.

The period will cover the three months from April 1 to June 30, so the immediate effect, if there was any, of the Brexit vote won't feature, but will cover the period before hand.

Broker Investec rates shares a 'buy' but has slashed its target price back to 390p from 470p.

The current price (Wednesday) is 334.5p, down 2.05% on the day.

Investec retail analyst Kate Calvert noted: "Halfords earnings are typically pretty stable in a weak demand environment."

While there is a FX headwind on COGS (cost of goods sold), the broker suspects much of this is likely to be offset by price rises.

The firm, she reckons, is also well positioned to benefit from a likely ‘staycation’ effect in 2017, namely less people travelling abroad, due to the weaker pound, and spending more money in the UK.

Notably, there was no Easter in the period under review , compared to half an Easter in the same period last year, with Halfords guiding to a 1% sales headwind.

"Wet weather may also have dampened demand, particularly for bikes, though this would result in a positive gross margin mix," said Calvert.

Also in focus tomorrow will be final results from fashion firm SuperGroup PLC (LON: SGP), sure to be closely scrutinised during the current environment.

Announcements expected -

Finals: SuperGroup PLC (LON:SGP)

Trading statements: Ashmore group PLC (LON:ASHM), Experian PLC (LON:EXPN), Halfords Group PLC (LON:HFD), Hays plc (LON:HAS), Moneysupermarket.com Group PLC (LON:MONY), Workspace Group plc (LON:WKP).
