Harley-Davidson Inc being investigated over brake malfunction

The US government is investigating complaints from riders of the bikes who say their brakes have failed without warning.

World-known motorcycle maker Harley-Davidson Inc (NYSE:HOG) may have hit a bump in the road.

The US government is investigating complaints from riders of the bikes who say their brakes have failed without warning.

The probe covers 430,000 Harley-Davidson motorcycles between 2008 and 2011 that have an anti-lock braking system.

Riders reported that the brakes on the hand lever and foot pedal did not work, causing one driver to crash into a garage door.

Reportedly, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received 43 complaints, with two reports of injuries.

The agency said it was possible that some riders may have been affected by not changing the brake fluid every two years as recommended by the firm.

In April this year, Harley attributed better than expected results to its newer products and revved-up marketing campaign which offset a difficult period.

Profits fell less than had been anticipated in the first quarter, driven by higher motorcycle sales, said the iconic motorbike maker.

It sold 1.4% more motorbikes compared with the corresponding period last year, with sales increasing across all regions except the US and Latin America.

Sales edged down 0.5% in the states and in Latin America sales tanked 26.5%.

But this was offset by a 16.3% rise in Canada, 6.6% in Asia and 8.8% in Europe, Middle East and Africa.
