Glaxo/Innoviva triple combo COPD treatment passes phase III

“By combining three medicines in a single inhaler we can offer a convenient, once-daily dosing option to patients while improving their symptoms."

GlaxoSmithKline PLC (LON:GSK) will submit US and European applications this year for a new smoker’s cough treatment after encouraging final trial results.

Glaxo, which is developing the treatment in partnership with us firm Innoviva INc. (NASDAQ:INVA), said the Phase III study showed its new triple combination therapy inhaler, FF/UMEC/VI outscored the current standard treatment, Symbicort Turbohaler.

Lung function and life quality also improved in patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Dave Allen, Glaxo’s head of respiratory R&D, said he was delighted with the outcome of the FULFIL study.

“Triple combination therapy is already a reality for many patients with COPD and is dispensed in multiple inhalers.

“By combining three medicines in a single inhaler we can offer a convenient, once-daily dosing option to patients while improving their symptoms."

Mike Aguiar, Innoviva’s chief executive, added that if approved, a once-daily triple combination "would be an important addition to our portfolio of combination respiratory products partnered with GSK including Relvar/Breo Ellipta and Anoro Ellipta."
