Oesophageal Doppler monitoring (ODM) specialist Deltex Medical Group plc (LON:DEMG) has hailed the “superb results” from a Spanish study of its ODM devices.
The medical devices group said the results of a multi-centre ODM trial in Spain had been presented at a major international clinical conference in London, and also revealed that ODM has been adopted into new national clinical guidelines in Spain, after the randomised trials showed substantial reductions in post-operative complications.
The trial was undertaken in five hospitals and included patients undergoing gastrointestinal, urological, gynaecological and orthopaedic surgery. The trial was led by Professor Calvo, who is head of the Department of Anaesthesia and Critical Care at the Infanta Leonor University Hospital in Madrid and Vice President of the Spanish Society of Anaesthesia.
The trial’s results included a 72% reduction in the total number of complications during surgery from 198 to 56; a 45% reduction in the number of patients suffering one or more complications on the operating table; and a two-day reduction in the median length of stay.
On top of that, the study found statistically significant reductions in five types of major complication: acute kidney injury (75% reduction); cardiopulmonary oedema (100% reduction); pneumonia (83% reduction); superficial surgical site infection (75% reduction); deep surgical site infection (74% reduction).
Ewan Phillips, Deltex’s chief executive, said the trial results bring the robust evidence case for the use of ODM right up to date.
“Complications after surgery are expensive to treat and reduce post-operative survival by an average of over seven years for each patient who suffers one,” Phillips stressed.
Now that intra-operative fluid management has been adopted within the Spanish Society of Enhanced Recovery national clinical guidelines for major surgery, national and regional health systems in Spain should start rolling out the new “best practice” procedures during the second half of the year.
"We are pursuing a number of options to expand our business in Spain to exploit the opportunities which would follow a successful national roll-out of enhanced recovery approaches to surgery," Phillips said.
