Peter Thiel, a co-founder of PayPal Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:PYPL), secretly funded wrestler Hulk Hogan’s lawsuit against the Gawker.com web site, Forbes magazine reported.
The New York Post implies that Thiel had a grudge against the site because it had tried to out him as gay before he was ready to public reveal his sexuality.
Hogan was awarded $140mln by a jury in his dispute against Gawker.
On other showbiz news (sorry to break it to you wrestling fans, but deep down you probably knew, right?), presidential wannabe Bernie Sanders has had a pop at Mickey Mouse.
Well, the cartoon character’s owner, Walt Disney Co (NYSE:DIS). Sanders used the company as an example of what he claimed was a “rigged economy” – rigged in favour of the rich.
"Disney pays its workers wages that are so low that many of them are forced to live in motels because they cannot afford a decent place to live,” Sanders claimed.
The company made a record $2.9bn in profit in the first quarter of this year, the Los Angeles Times noted.
On the other side of the political fence, another presidential wannabe, Donald Trump, saw things turned violent at one of his rallies in New Mexico last night.
Police in Albuquerque donned riot gear and fired off smoke grenades Tuesday night after hundreds of people protesting against Donald Trump threw rocks, bottles and burning Trump t-shirts outside the New Mexico convention center, where the presumptive Republican presidential candidate was speaking.
According to USA Today, Trump dismissed the chaos, tweeting later: "Great rally in New Mexico, amazing crowd!"
On the Washington Post’s business pages, the paper reports that the Occupy movement is set for a resurgence.
Capitalizing on populist anger toward Wall Street, a coalition of more than 20 labor unions and activist groups on Tuesday launched a new campaign, “Take On Wall Street”, to reform the financial industry.
One of its primary aims, the Post reports, is to have a law repealed that allows private equity managers to pay lower taxes as a result of something called the “carried interest loophole”.
It is hard to see that one being turned into a catchy slogan that angry protestors can bellow at passers-by.
