Most followed - Burberry, banks, Lloyds and BBC trending

A look at some of the most topical and trending stories of the day

News on Burberry Group PLC (LON:BRBY), UK jobs, Lloyds Banking Group PLC (LON:LLOY) and BBC website recipes were among the mix of themes midweek.

Shares in the fashion giant sank over 3.4% to drag down Footsie as the market reacted to lower annual profits, sales and revenues.

Last month the global chain said sales to travelling luxury customers in continental Europe had slowed and it reported "uneven" demand in the USA.

Broker Hargreaves Lansdown said the group's 2017 guidance offered "little near-term comfort".

Meanwhile, there was better news for Britain's workers, as the UK added more jobs than had been forecast in the three months to March while wages also rose.

Employment rose 44,000 to 31.58 million compared to the same period last year, which trumped an expectation for zero additions.

The re-privatisation of Britain's banks was also back on the agenda as it emerged the government would fully return its remaining 9.2% stake in Lloyds in 2016-17.

It comes after the Chancellor postponed a retail offering in January, which had been due this spring, due to market conditions.

The Treasury has also received a £130mln dividend payment, taking the total to £318mln. It means the total the government has recovered for tax payers is over £16bn after it bailed Lloyds out in 2008 by spending £20.5bn on a 43% stake.

In keeping with a column about website activity, one of the most popular themes of the last 24 hours has been the uproar caused by a shake-up by the BBC of its websites, leading to the potenatial closure of the BBC Food site, which contains hundreds of tried and tested recipes.

Local news indexes for more than 40 geographical areas in England will also no longer exist, it has been revealed. BBC Good Food, however, will remain..

From Mumsnet to other portals, the move to get rid of the BBC Food has attracted widespread criticism and an online petition now over 90,000 signatures.

Axe 1,000 Children's Sure Start Centres & Britain barely utters a peep. Archive some food recipes, and Middle England rises. #ToryUK.

The group said today it had raised over half a million pounds in a placing to, among other things, advance its bulk sampling operations in Sierra Leone.
