Glaxosmithkline meningitis vaccine achieves endpoints

GSK's meningitis vaccine achieved the primary and secondary endpoints.

GSK (LON:GSK) reported that its meningitis vaccine had achieved the group’s study goals.

Its Bexsero Meningococcal B vaccine achieved both primary and secondary endpoints with reduced 3-dose schedule (2+1) in safety and immunogenicity study in infants and children.

The group believes that the initial study results could support a reduced dosing schedule, which would mean fewer jabs would be needed for infants.

In September last year, the UK became the first country in the world to implement a routine immunisation programme with Bexsero with a reduced dosing schedule (2+1 series given at 2, 4 and 12 months).

The programme will provide important information about the safety and efficacy of Bexsero.

Invasive meningococcal B disease is the leading cause of life-threatening meningitis in the developed world. About one in 10 of those who contract the disease will die, even with appropriate treatment and around 10% of those who survive the disease may suffer a major physical or neurological disability.

Shares rose 0.6% to 1,450.5p.
