Week Ahead: Investors look out for Apple, Twitter, Facebook and BP results

After Silicon Valley giants Alphabet and Microsoft disappointed this week, next Tuesday brings Apple Inc’s second-quarter earnings.

Whilst there are plenty to look forward to here in the City, next week has something of a prime-time line up over on Wall Street.

After Silicon Valley giants Alphabet and Microsoft disappointed this week, next Tuesday brings Apple Inc’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) second-quarter earnings.

The iPhone maker’s guidance for the second quarter suggests an 11% decline in revenue compared to the same period last year.

iPhone sales account for just under 70% of its total revenue, so it seems management expect sales to decline during the period, a continued trend from the last quarter.

Earlier this year, the group blamed unfavourable currency rates and an unfair comparison to the same period last year, which was closer to the release of the newest model and had “catch-up in it from the first quarter.”

Analysts and indeed investors will be keen to get a taster of chief executive Tim Cook’s long-term view for the sales of the smartphones.

Investment firm Raymond James cut its outlook for iPhone sales. It said the move comes after Qualcomm’s chip unit guidance of 185mln provided further evidence of continued weakness in iPhone builds.

Jack Dorsey and Twitter will be also make headlines on Tuesday, and some analysts think the numbers could be better than the market’s lowered expectations.

Wednesday puts the focus on Facebook (LON:FB) with attentions likely to focus on ad revenue figures, particularly for mobile users.

Amazon (AMZN) is scheduled to report on its first quarter on Thursday.

Here in the UK, the spotlight will be on oil stocks as BP Plc (LON:BP.) lifts the lid on its performance in the first three months of 2016.

As the week progresses, investors will look to the drug stocks with GlaxoSmithKline (LON:GSK), AstraZenca (LON:AZN) and Shire (LON:SHP) all reporting.
