S&P 500 weighed down by Microsoft and Google

Tech titans Microsoft and Google both got it in the neck in after-hours trading

US blue chips look set for more falls today, after yesterday's shake-out, though losses should be modest.

Spread betting quotes point to the S&P 500 opening at around half a point down from last night's close of 2,091.

Tech titans Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) were both losing ground in pre-market trade after releasing updates after the bell yesterday.

Microsoft, the world’s largest software company saw net income fall to $3.76bn in the third quarter, compared to $4.99bn the previous year.

Revenues fell from $21.73bn to £20.53bn, although it was less than analysts had expected.

Google parent company Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOG) released first quarter earnings that failed to meet Wall Street forecasts.

Although the group saw revenue grow 17% in the period, it spent more money on experimental projects, engineers, data centres and YouTube shows, causing it to miss investor expectations.

Revenues rose to $20.26bn between January and March, from $17.26bn in the same period last year. Net income stood at $4.2bn, up from $3.5bn last year.

Google ad revenues surged 16% in the first quarter to $18bn as the number of ads, or paid clicks, jumped almost 30%, but the cost per click fell 9% in the period.

Heavyweights reporting today include fast food business McDonald's, American Airlines, earth-moving equipment maker Caterpillar and holding company General Electric.

The Dow Jones is tipped to show a two or three point rise.
