ITM Power receives grant to develop low cost hydrogen convertor

ITM is part of the HPEM2GAS project, which in total has received an award of €2.75mln

Hydrogen fuel group ITM Power (LON:ITM) will receive a grant of just over €915,000 as its share of an award to develop a new generation of energy convertors.

ITM is part of the HPEM2GAS project, which in total has received an award of €2.75mln to upgrade the PEM (proton exchange membrane) electrolyser for electricity grid use.

PEMs allow energy to be stored as hydrogen or converted for fuel to run hydrogen fuel-powered vehicles and are tipped as way to overcome the unpredictability of natural sources of electricity such as solar and wind.

The project will run for three years,

Other groups involved in the project include the CNR-ITAE Institute in Italy (the project coordinator), Solvay Specialty Polymers, IRD Fuel Cells, Stadtwerke Emden, Hochschule Emden/Leer and Uniresearch.

The project will run for three years, and the new electrolyser be tested at Stadtwerke Emden’s site in Germany.

Graham Cooley, ITM Power’s chief executive, said: "We are delighted to be participating in this project which represents ITM Power's culture of continuous improvement.

“The commercial spirit of the consortium is particularly pleasing and we look forward to demonstrating the next generation of smart electrolyser systems with Stadtwerk Emden in Germany, one of our fastest growing markets."
