Subdued start in prospect

The S&P 500 is expected to open a smidgen lower; the Dow, a tad higher

A slow start to the week is in prospect with the blue-chip benchmarks tipped to open little changed.

Spread betting quotes point to the S&P 500 open a fraction down from Friday's close of 2,049.5, while the Dow Jones average is seen nudging up half a dozen points or so from Friday's close of 17,602.

Among big-caps, attention is likely to be on paint company The Valspar Corp (NYSE:VAL) after it agreed to a $113 a share cash offer from rival Sherwin-Williams Co (NYSE:SHW).

Valspar, which ended Friday 89 cents lower at $83.80, shot up to $107.60 in pre-market trading.

There will be the usual media frenzy surrounding the latest announcement from Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) today, scheduled for 10.00am Pacific time. The iPhone maker is expected to unveil smaller versions of its flagship smartphone and a dinkier version of the iPad Pro.

It could also unveil new Apple watch straps, according to some too-easily impressed reporters.
