FTSE100 made a bright start as investors shrugged off any concerns over Britain leaving the UK the European Union.
The blue chip index was 70 points higher at 6,022, as campaigning started in earnest for the referendum in four months time.
It comes after a deal was struck by Prime Minister David Cameron on Friday night, over reforms he had sought.
Boris Johnson, London’s Mayor has already come out on the "no" side, though a raft of British businesses today backed the PM’s stay-put stance.
Miners were leading the index higher with Anglo American (LON:AAL) rising by 6% to 465p and BHP Billiton (LON:BLT) also 6% to the good at 776p.
BHP is tipped to cut its dividend when it reveals its full year numbers tonight.
Fallers were few and far between and led by HSBC, which only last week decided that the UK would be its home for the foreseeable future.
Results today showed flat profits and another investigation underway in the US. Shares fell 5% to 428p.
J Sainsbury (LON:SBRY) was another faller as it faced losing out Home Retail (LON:HOME) as Steinhoff made a rival approach at the end of last week.
Sainsbury’s eased 1.5% to 257p, while Home Retail jumped 12% to 172p, 3p below the price indicated by Steinhoff. Sainsbury’s has suggested a price of 167p and has until tomorrow to formalise an offer.
Ruby and emeralds group Gemfields (LON:GEM) ticked up 3% to 47p as it reiterated its full-year production guidance with at least three more auctions in the second half of the financialyear.
The coloured gems specialist said there would be more of an equal weighting between the two halves of the financial year than last year, when performance was weighted to the first half.
Goldplat (LON:GDP) was unchanged despite net profits for the six months to December of £395,000, a £796,000 turnaround from the loss over the same period in 2014.
Nostra Terra (LON:NTOG) jumped 16% to 0.102p as it agreed to pay $3mln to acquire a 60% stake in the producing assets in the Permian basin in the US.
The assets comprise 55 active vertical oil wells and have been flowing around 122 barrels of oil per day.
