Google Ideas becomes Jigsaw

Google's new holding company Alphabet has announced that its thinking hub, until now called Google Ideas, is getting a makeover

Google's new holding company Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOG) has announced that its thinking hub, until now called Google Ideas, is getting a makeover.

The new name for the five-year-old think tank is Jigsaw. Its purpose in life is to develop technology primarily to fend off digital censorship and online hacking.

"The team’s mission is to use technology to tackle the toughest geopolitical challenges, from countering violent extremism to thwarting online censorship to mitigating the threats associated with digital attacks," wrote Alphabet Chairman Eric Schmidt in a blog revealing the new operation.

He said that Jared Cohen, who ran Google Ideas, will serve as President of Jigsaw and continue to serve as an advisor to Schmidt.

Alphabet shares were up 2.4% at US$708.37.
