WH Smith (LON:SMWH) up 6% to 1,676p. Good trading update. High street sales rise for first time in years as adult colouring book sales pick up.
Pets at Home (LON:PETS) up 5% at 244p. Upbeat trading statement. Like-for-like sales up by 2.2% over the twelve weeks to start of January.
Sports Direct (LON:SPD) up 2% to 403p. Along with Randgold Resources, Mike Ashley’s company is the only FTSE 100 in the black heading towards the close.
FALLERS
First Quantum (LON:FQM) down 24% to 115p. Coper and zinc miner slides with mining sector in wake of BHP Billiton update.
Royal Dutch Shell (LON:RDSB) down 7% to 1,273p. Predicted more cost cuts this year including 10,000 job losses, annual profits were likely to fall short of hopes.
Biofrontera ( LON:B8F) down 5% at 137p. Biotech is to de-list from AIM on 18 February.

Mariana Resources (LON:MARL) up 4.5% to 1.67p. Gold group does well after royalty agreement over company’s Hot Maden development in Turkey is sold in a package worth US$22mln.
Randgold Resources (LON:RRS) up 4% to 4,427p. Gold miner was only riser on Footsie as the precious metal made ground while markets elsewhere tumbled.
Fallers
BHP Billiton (LON:BHP) down 8% at 575p. Mining major slumps to ten-year low after latest update with no cut backs in iron ore production or clues to possible bill from Samarco disaster in Brazil.
Anglo American (LON:AAl) down 7% to 222p. In sympathy with BHP’s downbeat statement and slide in price of platinum.
Motive TV (LON:MTV) down 35% at 0.013p. Some convertible loan holders turn down terms of settlement deal. Meeting called for 29 January.
