New stores make up for mild weather hit at B&M

Discounter's UK sales revenue in the 13-week period rose 24.4% to £614.5mln

Discounter B&M European Value Retail (LON:BME) increased sales revenue nearly a quarter in the run-up to Christmas, boosting its shares.

The group, which has former Tesco (LON:TSCO) boss Terry Leahy on its board, said group sales revenue between September 27 and December 26 increased by 22.8% to £647.8mln on an actual currency basis.

UK sales revenue in the 13-week period increased 24.4% to £614.5mln, with like-for-like sales of -0.7% in the quarter. B&M had a strong Christmas trading period with positive like-for-like sales.

The group said the performance reflected its successful store-opening programme, although mild temperatures hit sales of cold weather products and lower-than-normal service levels from its two new distribution centres.

At the end of the quarter the UK business had 487 stores, having opened 15 stores in the last 13 weeks and a net 62 in total during the year to date.

Its 55 German shops, which trade as Jawoll, increased euro-denominated sales revenue by 7.8% in the quarter, although that equated to a 2.1% fall to £33.3mln in sterling.

Chief executive Simon Arora said: "Overall we are on track with our plans for the year as a whole and remain comfortable with full-year market expectations."

Shares in the group rose 13.9p, or 5.4%, to 270.6p at lunchtime in London.

Malcolm Billington founded B&M in Blackpool in 1978 and Simon and Bobby Arora bought it in 2004 from Phildrew Investments, at which time the company traded from 21 stores.

Private equity firm Clayton, Dubilier & Rice bought a significant stake in the group and Leahy joined its board in 2013.

The company listed on the London Stock Exchange in 2014 following its acquisition of a majority stake in German discount retailer JA Woll.
