Xtract makes changes at Chepica after deaths

Chile’s Inspector of Mines recommended a number of changes, which had now been carried out said the company.

Xtract Resources (LON:XTR) expects to re-start ore processing at its Chepica gold mine in Chile by 20 January following an investigation into the death of two employees at the site.

Chile’s Inspector of Mines recommended a number of changes, which had now been carried out, said the company.

Discussions continue with the Inspector of Mines and the Inspector of Works on additional recommendations, but these can be implemented relatively quickly said Xtract and will not have a material impact on the mine’s operations.

Final approval to re-start the processing plant is now expected by no later than 20 January, the company added.

The two fatalities occurred when a trainee entered a restricted area without the necessary safety equipment. A shift supervisor was fatally injured attempting a rescue.

Jan Nelson, Xtract’s chief executive said: "Management, officials from the Chilean government and our employees have been working very closely in the last few weeks following the tragic accidents at the mine.

“I am pleased to confirm that we have implemented the recommendations for the mine on schedule, and I am particularly encouraged with the progress we have made to date at our underground development. “

He said the company also expects to release drilling results from a surface program before the end of January.
