Westminster Group lands new airport security deal

Westminster is set for a new long term contract with what it describes as “a significant international airport”.

Westminster Group (LON:WSG) has won another airport security deal, with memorandum of understanding for a new long term contract with what it describes as “a significant international airport”.

Whilst the specific airport is not named - as is typical with such announcements - the company says it is “in a region outside of existing operations”.

It added that the airport is strategically located and is a key hub serving several million passengers per year.

Westminster already operates security services at an international airport in West Africa, and in October it signed a memorandum of understanding for a number of other airports.

The company explained that it will now send a team of specialists to the airport to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the site, as a prelude to full contract discussions.

Peter Fowler, Westminster chief executive, said: "I am particularly delighted to announce this latest development in our roll out of airport security services around the world as not only is the airport strategically located in terms of our planned geographical spread of operations but it is an important hub serving numerous airlines and millions of passengers annually.

“For this reason the country and this airport hub has long been a target of ours and the signing of this MoU is a major step forward."

In regards to the airport deal announced in October, the company said that its surveys and analysis are now complete, with arrangements being made to start contract talks.

In other business, the company also told investors that the repair work for the Sierra Queen ferry, the flagship of its African ferry business, is nearly complete and preparations are being made for sea trials.

Whilst acknowledging that the repair process has been frustratingly slow, due to ‘in-country’ challenges, the company says the new ferry services business would offer what it calls “tremendous” expansion potential. It sees opportunities both within the West African country and other neighbouring countries.

Negotiations and feasibility studies are currently being worked on for these opportunities, it added.

Westminster also highlighted that, elsewhere in the business, its technology division is also pursuing a number of large scale project opportunities as well as smaller contracts.

It said that 2015 has been a disappointing year for the division’s revenue contribution, but, it expects to deliver on a substantial new and existing order pipeline during 2016.

"The technology division continues to deliver encouraging opportunities whilst additionally providing valuable technology support to the managed services operations,” Fowler added.

“Whilst there is of course no certainty as to timing or the final outcome of these or any of the project opportunities in progress we believe the detailed discussions and works we have been undertaking and the current security situation worldwide are providing significant momentum and we will of course update the market on progress in due course."
