Allergy Therapeutics ready to begin phase II trials on birch pollen innoculation

The point of the investigation is to find the optimal dose as well as assessing efficacy.

Allergy Therapeutics (LON:AGY) said it had completed patient recruitment for its drug candidate, PQBirch204, to treat birch pollen allergy.

In all 364 people have been registered for the phase II clinical study that will test the new treatment against a placebo that has no medical effect.

The point of the investigation is to find the optimal dose as well as assessing efficacy.

The trial is planned to complete by February, with results available in the second-quarter of next year.

PQBirch204 is part of the Pollinex Quattro portfolio of short-course vaccinations against common pollen allergies that are aluminium-free.

“Allergy to birch pollen is a significant health issue with around 6% of the population in Europe being skin-prick positive for the allergen," said chief executive Manuel Llobet.

The phase III study is set to get underway in the first quarter of 2017 and, if successful, the drug should be read for market in 2019.
