ITM Power gets green light for Rainham refuelling station

ITM Power has been granted full planning permission to construct a hydrogen refuelling station close to London's busy A13 road in Rainham.

ITM Power (LON:ITM), the energy storage and clean fuel company, has been granted full planning permission to construct a Hydrogen Refuelling Station at Rainham, Essex.

Havering Borough Council has given the green light for the station to be built at The Centre for Engineering and Manufacturing Excellence (CEME) site in Rainham, a research, skills, education and business campus situated just down the road from the Ford motor factory in Dagenham.

The group currently has £10.46mln of projects under contract and a further £5.71mln of contracts in the final stages of negotiation, ITM Power told investors.

Planning permission for the station was awarded within eight weeks from the time of submission and received no objections, demonstrating that it is becoming easier to gain permission for hydrogen refuelling infrastructure in the UK, ITM said.

The station will be open to the public in spring 2016 and is part of the HyFive project, a £31 million European project involving leading motor manufacturers, hydrogen fuel suppliers, the Mayor of London's Office and energy consultancies. The project aims to deploy fuel cell vehicles and hydrogen refuelling stations in three clusters across Europe to make hydrogen vehicles a viable choice for motorists in Europe.

ITM Power was chosen by the London Hydrogen Partnership to be the Hydrogen Refuelling Station partner for London. This resulted in an award of a contract to supply three ITM Power electrolyser-based refuelling stations.

"This is a key step in rolling out refuelling infrastructure in East London," said Dr Graham Cooley, ITM Power’s chief executive officer.
