Macy's (NYSE:M) sank 13% to $40.85 after the department store operator reported its third straight quarter of sales slump as customers reduced spending and a strong dollar cut spending by tourists.

J. C. Penney (NYSE:JCP) fell 2.8% to $8.44, erasing an earlier gain, after saying it has settled a class-action lawsuit accusing the U.S. retailer of false advertising and announcing that its third-quarter earnings performance exceeded its expectations.
