Looking for your next resource investment? Look no further. Retail investors will have a unique opportunity to meet the senior management teams of some of Canada's top junior resource companies at the Subscriber Investment Summit in Toronto later this month.
The event, to be held at the Hilton Hotel on Saturday February 28th, is sponsored by three of the most well-respected newsletter writers in the mining and energy industries: Eric Coffin from the Hard Rock Analyst, Keith Schaefer from the Oil and Gas Investments Bulletin and Tommy Humphreys from Resource Opportunities.
"It's a juried show. Presenting companies have to be invited by one of us three," said Schaefer, who was responsible for hand-picking the presenters on the oil and gas side.
The summit, unlike other industry conferences, insists that CEOs or CFOs present to the crowds, with no junior investor relations professionals permitted to represent, thus ensuring real access for retail investors to the value-add decision makers.
"Companies have a 10 minute speaking slot, where senior management has to give its best elevator pitch," the newsletter editor said.
"Our subscribers really like that we create a lot of one-on-one time, with coffee breaks in the morning and afternoon, as well as a one-hour lunch. During these times, CEOs are able to chat with retail investors face-to-face."
Schaefer says this is particularly important for the energy sector, where retail investors just don't receive access to Calgary-based management teams. This, he says, is because many junior energy companies have cash flow, unlike junior miners that are more reliant on equity markets.
"Junior oil and gas companies are more institutionally followed than junior miners. CEOs go out and do big institutional roadshows, but very rarely do any retail shows at all.
"This will be the first time presenting to retail investors for more than half of the [oil and gas] companies at our Subscriber Summit."
He highlighted one energy company in particular that will be presenting at the event: Chinook Energy (TSE:CKE), which Schaefer praised for producing oil and gas without ever raising equity since its IPO. Chinook, which has oil and gas assets in Western Canada and Tunisia, is in one of the best positions to buy up distressed assets in the market because of its strong balance sheet.
"It's a unique opportunity for retail investors to not only hear from these CEOs, but also meet and talk with them. Management is a key thing in investing -- you invest in people," explains Schaefer.
The Oil and Gas Investments Bulletin editor also offered up some tips for navigating through the current cycle, saying investors should be seeking companies with higher cash positions than normal due to the volatility in commodity markets, with "very little to no debt."
Four of the five energy companies presenting at the Subscriber Investment Summit have no debt on their balance sheets, he said.
With oil prices tumbling amid a supply glut, the event is sure to be an interesting one as investors will come to understand what managements' plans are for the future.
Aside from Chinook, Canamax Energy (CVE:CAC), Divergent Energy Services (CVE:DVG), Renaissance Oil Corp (CVE:ROE) and Valeura Energy (CVE:VLE) will be presenting at the event in the energy sector.
In the mining industry, Columbus Gold (CVE:CGT), Constantine Metal Resources (CVE:CEM), Continental Gold (TSE:CNL), Cordoba Minerals (CVE:CDB), Excelsior Mining (CVE:MIN), Nevsun Resources (TSE:NSU), NexGen Energy (CVE:NXE), North Arrow Minerals (CVE:NAR), Precipitate Gold (CVE:PRG), Rock Haven and Sunridge Gold (CVE:SGC) will take the stage.
