Aircraft manufacturer Boeing (NYSE:BA) has received an order for up to nine 787 Dreamliners from El AL Israel Airlines.
At list prices, the order is worth more than US$2.2bn.
El AL will also lease six other 787 aircraft from independent leasing companies, as it looks to refresh its long-haul fleet and provide additional capacity.
The 787 Dreamliner has had a troubled history, coming three years late to market before all Dreamliners were grounded for almost four months in 2013 after one craft's lithium-ion batteries caught fire.
El AL, however, has stuck by Boeing through thick and thin, using no other manufacturer's aircraft since setting up in 1961.
“The Dreamliner is a perfect fit for EL AL's medium to long haul routes. The addition of 787s to the EL AL fleet will enable it to grow its route structure, while providing more range and capacity with exceptional passenger comfort," claimed Ray Conner, chief executive and president of Boeing Commercial Airplanes.
