McDonald’s (NYSE:MCD) jumped more than 7% to a record high of $110.88 after the world’s largest hamburger chain posted same-store sales growth in all of its markets, including its critical U.S. segment.
Dow Chemical (NYSE:DOW) gained 5% to $49.85 after the chemical maker posted better-than-expected earnings in the third quarter.
3M (NYSE:MMM) rose 4.2% to $156.11. The maker of Scotch tape and Post-it notes said it would trim 1,500 jobs in a restructuring plan after posting disappointing sales in the third quarter, weakened by a strong dollar and a global economic slowdown.
Texas Instruments (NASDAQ:TXN) advanced 10.3% to $57.23 after the chipmaker reported stronger-than-expected profit and revenue for its third quarter and provided upbeat guidance for the fourth quarter.
Caterpillar (NYSE:CAT) added 4.4% to $71.94. The world's biggest construction and mining equipment maker reported profit more than halved in the third quarter, hurt by weak worldwide construction activity, mining and oil drilling. Shares fell in premarket trading.
Southwest Airlines (NYSE:LUV) rose 7% to $43.90 after lower fuel prices and cost controls helped the U.S. budget carrier reported profit nearly doubled in the latest quarter and forecast that unit revenue would rise in the current quarter.
FALLERS
American Express (NYSE:AXP) slipped 5.7% to $72.15 as the card company missed all analyst expectations in the third quarter, hurt by continued headwinds from a stronger U.S. dollar and a rise in marketing spending.
Dunkin’ Brands (NASDAQ:DNKN) fell 1.5% to $40.29 after posting better-than-expected results in its latest quarter, despite lackluster sales and traffic at its Dunkin’ Donuts U.S. locations.
