Dow Chemical Q3 profit tops estimates

The chemical maker will "review all options" for its agrosciences business.

Dow Chemical (NYSE:DOW) gained on Thursday after the chemical maker posted better-than-expected earnings in the third quarter.

Net income rose to $1.29bn, or $1.09 per share, in the July-to-September quarter, from from $852mln, or $0.71 per share, a year earlier, the Midland, Michigan-based company said in a statement on Thursday.

Adjusted earnings were $0.82 per share, above the $0.69 average estimate of 21 analysts surveyed by Capital IQ.

But third-quarter revenue fell 16% to $12.04bn year-over-year, lagging behind the Wall Street consensus of $12.38bn.

Also on Thursday, Dow Chemical said it would "review all options" for its agrosciences business, where sales have been falling for a year, and restructure its joint ventures in Kuwait.

Sales in the unit dropped 17% in the third quarter, hit by a shift in acreage to soybean from corn and sluggish selling prices for insecticides and pesticides.

Dow started a massive restructuring in 2013, reducing its exposure to low-margin commodity businesses, including its century-old chlorine business.
