RISERS
Citigroup (NYSE:C) surged 4.3% to $52.93 after the third-largest U.S. bank by assets reported a 51% jump in quarterly profit. Lower costs more than offset a fall in revenue amid increased uncertainty about the timing of a U.S. interest rate hike.
Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS) rose 2.6% to $184.44, reversing an earlier drop. The investment firm reported quarterly profit and revenue as bond trading weakened amid renewed concerns about global economic growth.
Philip Morris International (NYSE:PM) advanced 2.2% to $86.30 as increased cigarette prices helped the U.S. tobacco company top third-quarter profit expectations and raise the low end of its full-year forecast.
ADRs of Syngenta AG (NYSE:SYT) rose 1.5% to $63.88, erasing an earlier loss. The Swiss agricultural chemicals maker posted a larger-than-expected 12% decline in sales in the third quarter, hurt by the weak currency in Brazil, its second-largest market.
FALLERS
Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) tumbled 8% to $101.37 after the online video service trailed expectations for its profit, revenue and subscriber growth in the third quarter.
Garmin (NASDAQ:GRMN) plummeted 15% to $31.55 as the maker of fitness and GPS products slashed its earnings forecast for its third quarter and for the full-year. The Swiss company said current global economic environment has made it difficult to generate the revenue growth it had forecast.
Seagate Technology (NASDAQ:STX) plunged 14% to $41.13, stretching this year’s losses, after the data storage company said that its revenue and gross profit margin will probably trail market expectations for its latest quarter.
UnitedHealth Group (NYSE:UNH) skidded 1.7% to $120.00 even as the largest US health insurer reported stronger profit and revenue, helped by an increase in membership.
