Wednesday's agenda: Can Marston's keep momentum going?

he third quarter was in line with expectations with profit margins slightly above last year

Marston’s is to update the market on Wednesday, having only recently ended its financial year, and investors will be looking for information about how it has performed since the middle of July.

The third quarter was in line with expectations with profit margins slightly above last year, so the market will be keen to hear if those trends have continued.

Graham Spooner, at The Share Centre, added: “The relatively poor weather through the crucial month of August may have dampened sales, but investors should note that rising disposable incomes and strong performances from other companies in the travel and leisure sector are helping investor sentiment.”

On the economic front, US retail sales data for September is due to be announced on Wednesday.

The August headline reading saw a gain of 0.2%, marginally below the consensus expectation of 0.3%.

Hargreaves Lansdown said: “Sales excluding volatile auto and fuel sales grew by 0.3%, again slightly below forecast, with both potentially impacted by concerns for China and August market volatility.”

Restaurants, an important indicator of spending on luxury goods, rose by 0.7% to extend a run of gains, whilst figures for July were revised higher.

“In all and with the debate over the timing of any US interest rate rise still on-going, investors will again scrutinise the data closely,” Hargreaves Lansdown said.
