Paper – Barclays picks investment banker as new boss

Here’s Tuesday’s flick through the business pages, featuring Barclays, Shell, Yodel, Royal Mail, VW, Cammell Laird, and Glencore

The Times reports that Barclays (LON:BARC) has made a dramatic shift back to its controversial investment bank by selecting Jes Staley, a veteran American investment banker, as its new chief executive.

Also according to the paper, Shell (LON:RDSB) is selling two North Sea assets as it turns its back on the basin in response to high costs and low oil prices.

Tycoon Nick Candy is set to reverse a new advertising company into a shell that had previously been set up for a natural resources deal, The Times reports.

The Financial Times says UK courier Yodel is to hire 7,000 temporary drivers as it tries to have a better Christmas, and prevent late deliveries like last year.

Poland and the Baltic states are set to sign a gas pipeline deal, reports The FT, which describes it as a ‘highly strategic’ arrangement that’s part of an effort to break Russia’s energy stranglehold.

In The Independent there’s a report that the UK government has already begun selling off its remaining 14% stake in Royal Mail.

It also reports that no viable offers were received by bankruptcy officials overseeing the Redcar steelworks, and as a result the facility will close.

Recalls of VW diesel cars could continue through into 2017, according to The Daily Telegraph.

The Telegraph also reports that British shipbuilder Cammell Laird has landed the largest civil contract ‘in a generation’.

It also says Glencore (LON:GLEN) is planning the sale of two copper mines in Australia as it works to reduce its debt pile.
